Thyme is a perennial plant that grows spontaneously in regions of the Mediterranean. The essential oil is extracted from the fresh, flowering tips by way of steam distillation. The product obtained from the initial distillation is a very potent, red oil, but the essential oil that is used commercially has undergone a subsequent distillation that makes it less of an irritant. This oil from the second distillation is white thyme oil. It is a tonic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, antiparassitic, parasiticide, activator of the immune system, anthelmintic, anti-decay treatment, astringent, and a healing agent. The white thyme essential oil is perhaps the best natural antiseptic. It is highly effective for respiratory disorders such as bronchitis, sore throat, and influenza. It is also used to combat intestinal and urinary-tract infections. The use of this essential oil provides excellent results in the treatment of rheumatic pain, muscle cramps, and inflammation of the sciatic nerve. Compresses or cleanses are recommended for acne, boils, dermatitis, and other skin disorders.
