Amphoteric surfactants are molecules that can have both a negative and a positive charge at the same time. They are an important group of substances that are widely used despite the fact that their cleansing power is markedly lower than that of anionic surfactants. Their main primary characteristic is, in fact, their ability to reduce the aggressiveness of the primary surfactants, and especially alkyls and alkyl ether sulfates. Alkyl betaines are the most common class, but those that are best tolerated by the skin with the same characteristics as the alkyl betaines are the alkylamidopropyl betaines (cocomidopropyl betaine).
