What is oily skin?

Oily skin is a type of skin, a condition that is more likely to be found in young people and during adolescence, but which can also occur in adulthood. It is due to an excessive production of sebum, which promotes the appearance of blemishes and impurities.

The characteristics of oily skin

Oily skin is generally shiny almost everywhere, especially on the nose, chin and forehead, but also on the cheeks. It is often characterized by impurities, blackheads, pimples, enlarged pores, and acne tendencies. To the eye, it can sometimes also appear dehydrated and with a dull complexion, rough and irregular to the touch.

How can I tell if I have oily skin?

Many people are convinced that they have oily skin, but they are wrong. To recognize it correctly, first take this test: cleanse your face with a foaming cleanser, wait half an hour and then look in the mirror. If your face starts to get shiny almost everywhere, on the cheeks and especially on the nose and between the eyebrows, then you have oily skin. If, on the other hand, the skin only becomes shiny on the T-zone (i.e. nose, chin and forehead), while the cheeks remain dry, then you have combination skin. For a counter-check, you can also press a thin tissue paper on the skin and check whether or not the paper has absorbed traces of sebum.

This is the most common condition. ⚠️ Be careful, however, oily skin is not always oily to the touch, in fact it can also manifest itself in other ways. Let’s see them one by one in detail.

How many types of oily skin are there?

There are different types of oily skin, each due to the different ways of overproducing sebum:

  • Oily: the sebum is fluid and the skin appears oily, greasy, shiny and with enlarged pores.
  • Seborrheic: the production of sebum is greater, such as to exaggerate the pores of the skin and give life to an uneven grain, like “orange peel”.
  • Asphyxiating: sebum is thick, almost waxy, and tends to remain imprisoned in the follicles, “plugging” them. This obstruction also traps bacteria and dirt, thus resulting in comedones which, depending on whether they remain closed or open, turn into whiteheads and blackheads, respectively. In the first case, the fat trapped under the skin remains white, in the second it oxidizes in contact with air, blackening. In both cases, the skin is rough to the touch, dry and sometimes even thicker, due to the excess of accumulated sebum.
  • Impure and acne-prone: it is characterized by the presence of red pimples without pus, called papules, and pimples with visible pus (those with a white or yellow dot in the center), called pustules: both are caused by bacteria, which find a way to proliferate easily in sebum.

Causes of oily skin

What causes oily skin and what causes it? The excessive production of sebum that characterizes it could be due to different factors, such as genetics, an unbalanced diet, food allergies, hormonal imbalances and even polycystic ovary syndrome or the use of certain medications.

If you think any of these factors are affecting your skin’s well-being, the first step is to contact your doctor!

Discarding the assumptions listed above, oily skin could be caused by:

  • use of the wrong cosmetics: too aggressive formulas and too frequent scrubs could alter their balance, as well as products with a too heavy texture or products that are not suitable for your skin type;
  • Poor hydration or too aggressive cleansing: if you have dehydrated skin, or if you wash your face too hard, the lipid barrier that protects it could be altered and the skin could react by producing even more sebum! Did you know? Yes, it sounds strange, but that’s just the way it is! So it’s better to choose targeted and natural cleansers, such as the BeOnMe Purifying Facial Cleansing Gel, and dedicate only a few seconds to cleansing, no more!

Finally, three factors that can contribute to worsening the condition of oily skin are:

  • the climate: when the outside temperature is particularly high, heat, sweat and steam could clog more pores and irritate the skin;
  • pollution: it negatively affects oily skin, since it attacks the skin’s barrier and polluting particles can clog pores;
  • poor hygiene due to bad habits, such as not removing make-up and not cleansing before going to sleep, not using a foaming cleanser to remove make-up remover residues, not changing bed linen, not changing the mask frequently (this is one of the factors that cause Maskne), touching yourself with dirty hands, not cleaning your mobile phone and make-up accessories. All of these are mistakes not to make!

What to do to treat oily skin

We are often asked: “how to cure or get rid of oily skin quickly”, “can you really cure oily skin?”. As you may have understood, oily skin is a condition due to multiple factors, genetic, physical, behavioral, and external. It is important, therefore, to be aware that:

  • Everyone will have to implement different strategies to achieve the result;
  • you need to have patience and perseverance to change your habits;
  • the skin has its own rhythms to change and evolve;
  • It always takes a pinch of self-love to feel good.

That said, to treat and care for oily skin over time, follow this Practical Guide for Oily Skin:

1. Good General Habits

  • Cleanse and moisturize your face morning and night.
  • Always wash your face and moisturize it after doing sports.
  • Remove make-up every night.
  • Do 1-2 scrubs per week.
  • Do not squeeze pimples and blackheads.
  • Do not use home remedies against pimples (toothpaste, lemon…).
  • Don’t touch your face with dirty hands.
  • Keep your make-up accessories and phone clean.

The ally that should not be missing in your routine is definitely the Spot Treatment, a certified organic formula with a quick effect, based on aloe, thyme and tea-tree, which deflates, reddens and heals!

3. Which cleanser to choose and how to cleanse oily skin

☀️ In the morning: Use an exfoliating salicylic acid foaming cleanser, such as BeOnMe’s Purifying Cleansing Gel, made with organic aloe and oat oil. Why do you have to wash your face as soon as you get up? To remove sebum produced during the night, dead skin cells, and even dust and bacteria caught by the hair or pillowcase!

🌙 In the evening: if you wear makeup, proceed with the Double Cleansing, then first dissolve the make-up with a fresh, delicate and oil-free make-up remover, such as BeOnMe Natural Micellar Water, based on decongestant and moisturizing organic cornflower. Then remove the residue of make-up remover with the Cleansing Mousse, and rinse your face well. If you don’t wear makeup, just use the Purifying Cleansing Gel.

Purifying facial cleanser for oily skin

To improve skin texture, do 1-2 scrubs a week, in the evening after cleansing and before moisturizing. BeOnMe Cleansing Scrub Gel is the perfect ally for oily skin, because it contains microspheres of different sizes that help to cleanse the skin deeply and prevent the appearance of blackheads. In addition, it contains a purifying and astringent cocktail of nettle, mallow and apple cider vinegar, which minimizes the appearance of pores.

5. How to moisturize oily skin day and night

Choose a fast-absorbing gel serum, a targeted formula that can counteract impurities and rebalance the skin. Face Serum for Impure Skin contains the right mix of ingredients to purify, refresh and soothe, such as aloe, lavender, organic bitter orange blossom and linden. Remember that the serum should be applied before the cream.

Which cream to apply? Oily skin needs a light cream that moisturizes without weighing it down, such as BeOnMe Face Cream Combination Skin, based on astringent ingredients such as organic witch hazel. It also contains rice powder to mattify the face, absorb excess sebum and even out the complexion. How much to use? Apply a thin layer of it.

🌙 In the evening, after cleansing, also apply the Purifying Citrus Toner: a refreshing mix of orange, lemon and grapefruit, with an astringent and antibacterial action, perfect for refining and improving the skin’s texture and making your routine even more effective! After applying the toner, proceed with serum and cream.

6. What masks to use to combat oily skin

Alternate between two masks each week: one purifying and one moisturizing.

To purify, choose a delicate but effective mask, preferably mattifying mask, such as the BeOnMe Purifying Face Mask: its special transparent lipogel formula with marine extracts is very easy to apply, does not redden, does not pull the skin and does not dry it out. In addition, it gives a beautiful long-lasting matte effect!

To rebalance hydration levels and improve the overall well-being of your skin, apply Hydrating Face Mask: it contains organic chamomile with balancing and astringent power, zinc oxide that helps repair tissues, and a super moisturizing xylitol complex that helps limit water loss due to evaporation.

8. How to Apply Makeup to Oily Skin

  • Prep your skin by holding the Purifying Face Mask on for 5-10 minutes: mattify and texturize.
  • Apply Face Serum Impure Skin by massaging it gently.
  • Apply a veil of Face Cream Combination Skin to even out the complexion, keep shiny areas at bay and give yourself a matte base.
  • Choose a cream foundation, but with an extra silky and dry finish. If you prefer, in summer you can lighten it by mixing it with a few drops of Astringent Face Serum for Impure Skin. Powder foundation is also fine, but only in case you have a fairly even skin texture. Otherwise, dust may accumulate on the scabs or around the inflammations, making them stand out even more. Always prefer make-up with natural formulas, free of silicones and parabens.
  • Set your makeup with a sprinkle of powder-based powder-based powder, which will help absorb excess sebum.
