What are milia?

Annoying and unsightly, the so-called milia come in the form of white dots, white bubbles scattered on the skin, 1-2 mm in diameter. They are so called because they resemble in color, shape and size, precisely the milia, a grass. They can appear at any age and manifest themselves on the face, often in these areas:

Difference between milia and white dots

Be careful, you should not confuse them with classic whiteheads, i.e. closed comedones. Do you know what the difference is between whiteheads and milia? Now I’ll 😊 explain it to you

Closed comedones precede the formation of blackheads: they are accumulations of sebum, bacteria and keratin that, trapped inside the hair follicles, turn into white, soft balls.

When the whitehead opens, the sebum in contact with the air oxidizes and becomes dark and thus gives rise to the blackhead. Whiteheads are a form of non-inflammatory acne and are often due to hormonal imbalances, so they are more common in adolescence, and in most cases they self-exact.

Milia, on the other hand, are keratin micro-cysts, with a harder consistency, which form under the skin and are not linked to a particular age group, but appear at any age, even in newborns. Apart from the latter case, whiteheads almost never regress on their own, but should be removed by a professional, a dermatologist.

Causes of milia

The factors that contribute to the formation of milia are not yet fully established and can be many. What has been observed is that they tend to appear in all those situations in which the skin loses its balance and the lipid barrier is attacked, or when heavy and occlusive products are used.

Ecco alcune cause più comuni:

  • Poor facial cleansing: uncared for skin, with clogged skin pores and not exfoliated, is more prone to milia.
  • Use of the wrong products: whether it is skincare or make-up products, the use of cosmetic formulas that are not suitable for your skin type, perhaps too aggressive or occlusive, could promote the appearance of milia.
  • Aggressive cleansing: cleansing the face aggressively, with water that is too hot, for too long, rubbing the face or using a cleanser that is too degreasing, can alter and weaken the hydrolipidic film of the skin and therefore make it more prone to the formation of milia.
  • Exposure to UV rays: the sun’s rays and tanning lamps are among the factors that weaken the skin and negatively affect its health, especially when they cause sunburn. Skin that has suffered burns, or with scars, including acne, is also prone to milia.
  • Other risk factors are related to various skin conditions, such as Lichen planus, the use of cortisone creams and even treatments such as radiotherapy.

Milia in children and infants

Milia can also appear on the skin of children and babies: the causes, however, are not yet fully understood, but they usually disappear on their own after a short time.

How to remove milia

Milia, being closed and under the skin, cannot be crushed! Sometimes they disappear on their own within a few months of their appearance. In all other cases, you should seek the help of a dermatologist. Even and especially if you have milia in the rim of your eyes (yes, it can happen that you have milia in your eyes or on your eyelid).

Avoid removing milia by squeezing them as if they were whiteheads, because you would only risk ruining your skin (and in any case, you should never pop pimples, blackheads and whiteheads by hand!).

If you were looking for DIY you should avoid them, as you may be left with scars, or you may cause an infection. It is better to contact a dermatologist who, depending on the case, will use different techniques to remove milia, making a micro incision with a sterile blade or needle and squeezing the trapped keratin, or using laser or liquid nitrogen. In other cases, he will recommend an antibiotic.

Creams and products for milia

To prevent and reduce the appearance of milia on the face, we recommend that you do a proper weekly cleansing and an excellent daily double cleansing of the face, regularly using three key targeted products + two for hydration:

The scrub for milia

💧 To eliminate and prevent whiteheads and milia, it is absolutely important to use an exfoliating scrub twice a week.

We recommend the BeOnMe Cleansing Scrub Gel which contains granules of different sizes that allow for deep cleansing of the pores. This special scrub not only exfoliates, but at the same time moisturizes and purifies the skin thanks to organic aloe and nettle and mallow extracts.

The detergent for milia

Did you know that the key ingredient in keeping pores clean and loosening trapped impurities is salicylic acid? ✨ This magical ingredient can be found in the certified organic and vegan formula of our Purifying Cleansing Gel. Use it morning and evening to cleanse your face well and keep it clean.

✅ A fundamental step for the correct anti-milia grain routine is the evening double cleansing, which consists of first dissolving the make-up with micellar water and then cleansing the face with the cleanser to remove the residues of make-up remover, make-up and impurities!

When you put on makeup, in fact, it is very important to go to sleep with a clean face, and to do so it takes two steps.

1️⃣ We recommend using Organic Cornflower Micellar Water and bamboo fiber make-up remover pads to remove makeup well without burning and irritating the eyes.

2️⃣ And then the Salicylic Acid Cleansing Gel to cleanse the face well, together with the natural exfoliating sponge in konjac that leaves the skin perfectly clean.

If you want, you can also use the microfiber make-up remover sponge that will help you effectively export all the makep.

The face mask for milia

🌊 Twice a week, remember to do the Natural Purifying and Mattifying Face Mask with marine extracts that helps limit sebum production and rebalance the skin,

Cream for milia

The Face Cream for Combination Skin, sebum-absorbing and mattifying is the best cream to prevent milia because it has a light, non-occlusive formula, and moisturizes the skin without weighing it down.

We recommend that you combine it with the specific serum for your skin type, choosing from:

  • The Face Serum for Man (which is actually a unisex moisturizing face serum) for those who want an impalpable veil of super hydration and a splash of aloe and hyaluronic acid
