Castor oil is a very dense vegetable oil obtained by the cold pressing of seeds from the castor oil plant. It has certain affinities with keratin (the main constituent of lashes, hair and nails) and is known for its reinforcing, restructuring and softening properties. It is effective in treating dry, damaged hair in that it is able to re-equilibrate oil in the hair (which is lost primarily at the shaft and ends), thereby preventing weakening of the hair and avoiding the formation of split ends. It is often an ingredient in mascara because it lends strength and volume to lashes. Applied to the skin, it forms a film that greatly reduces evaporation of skin moisture and, hence, dehydration.
